Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Tuesday busted a cricket betting racket by arresting four people who had been placing bets on the ongoing Australian professional T20 cricket league called The Big Bash.

On a tip-off, the police conducted raids in a Santacruz West residential building where several incriminating materials and documents were recovered.

Shriram Koregaonkar, senior police inspector of Santacruz police station, said "The accused had rented the apartment for the purpose of betting. During raids, we learnt that the prime accused in the case is 48-year-old Bipin Shah. He was betting on the Australian T20 cricket league called Big Bash and was communicating with other bookies and fixing rates.”

Apart from Shah, the other accused have been identified as Jitendra Jadhav (38), Narayan Rebari (24) and Devilal Jaat (40). Shah was previously arrested by the anti-extortion cell in another high profile betting case.

The police have seized 14 mobile phones, laptops and some documents from the spot.

According to the police, while Shah was communicating with other bookies and fixing rates, Jadhav operated on the laptops, Rebare received calls from other bookies and customers and Jaat was assisting them.

All four accused have been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act and Indian Telegram Act. The police is ascertaining if the gang was part of a larger syndicate involving high-profile bookies. The police is also checking the money trail in the case and ascertaining the amount of money exchanged in the betting.
