Mangalore: Curfew has been reimposed till Wednesday morning in the riot hit city and its rural limits of Konaje and Ullal after a relaxation of twelve hours on Tuesday.

Curfew was clamped from 1900 hrs (IST) to 0700 hrs (IST) on Wednesday, police said.

No untoward incident was reported during the curfew relaxation period from 0700 hrs (IST) to 1900 hrs (IST) on Tuesday, police said.

Violence had flared up on last Wednesday after Bajrang Dal activists stopped a vehicle carrying cattle to a slaughterhouse.

Meanwhile, District Incharge and Fisheries Minister Nagaraj Shetty said a "permanent solution" was the need of the hour to bring normalcy in the district.

Presiding over a peace committee meeting, he said the government would provide suitable compensation to the families of the deceased and injured and also those who had suffered property losses.

"The government intends to punish the guilty who have instigated and provoked the violence," he said.

A peace committee in each sub-division, comprising five members each from both communities, should be constituted to bring peace and harmony, he said adding one such committee in Surathkal had yielded "fruitful results."

Mangalore legislator N Yogish Bhat suggested that a police squad should be set up to contain illegal transport of cattle, eve-teasing and other such issues which lead to such situations.

Earlier, the meeting witnessed some trouble when a member of the public alleged that the Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) K Ashraf had instigated the violence.

The situation was, however, contained by police before it could get out of hand.
