Bhubaneswar:A deep depression has formed in the Bay of Bengal, 740 kilometres Southwest of Gopalpur port in Orissa.
Under its impact, heavy rainfall is expected in many parts of the state particularly South Orissa.
The Meteorological department of Bhubaneswar says that the deep depression is heading towards coastal Andhra and Tamil Nadu that may cause heavy rainfall there including South coastal Orissa.
However the depression has yet to translate into a cyclone.
With memories of the 1999 cyclone in coastal Orissa that left thousands dead still fresh the Government has put the district administration on alert.
Deputy Director Bhubaneswar Met Department, SC Sahoo says, "The fear of another cyclone has got the state government swinging into action. All Collectors of the ten coastal districts in coastal Orissa are on high alert and the fishermen have been told not to venture out to the sea."
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik stated that the situation was being monitored closely.
"The months of October and November are very vulnerable to cyclonic storms. Because the people of Orissa have suffered in the past, the people here take any information on cyclones very seriously," he said.
The depression, which has moved slightly in the northwesterly direction, is expected to cross the North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coast by Friday morning.
"The landfall point is expected to be between Chennai and Ongole," said S C Sahoo.
