KOCHI: The KSEB experts on Tuesday submitted before the High Court that a dam break analysis is essential to know the impact of an eventuality with regard to the Mullaperiyar dam. KSEB chairman T M Manoharan submitted that the storage capacity of the reservoirs in Idukki at different levels have been computed. “The maximum capacity of Idukki dam is 70.5 TMC. At present the dam contains 59.5 TMC of water. This cannot be a regular feature. We keep as much water as possible, up to the safety level. In case of an eventuality, not only water but the debris will also flow into the reservoir. I am not an expert to predict what will happen at that time. To find out the effect, dam break analysis should be carried out,” Manoharan said. Experts submitted that KSEB has been producing maximum electricity using five generators at Moolamattom. “The water level is being brought down to the maximum extend. There is no need to flush out the water through the spillway,” he said. According to experts, the distance between Mullaperiyar dam and the reservoir at Idukki is 18 kms. Water at Idukki dam is still water. Even if water reaches here after a dam break from Mullaperiyar, the still water at Idukki will reduce its pressure. The High Court reiterated its concern about people whose lives are in danger. “Panic has gripped the people living downstream of the dam. Their blood pressure is also increasing. Take maximum steps to create awareness among the people,” the HC said.
