DD offers 'unconditional apology' to Malawi
One of the DD commentators had allegedly introduced the African nation as among the world's least developed countries during CWG opening ceremony on Oct 3.

New Delhi: After the Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of External Affairs step in, Doordarshan offered an "unconditional apology" the African nation of Malawi. One of the DD commentators had allegedly introduced the African nation as among the world's least developed countries during Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on October 3.

The DD Director General Aruna Sharma has tendered a written unconditional apology to the Malawian High Commission for the matter.

In a letter to Malawi's High Commissioner to India Chrissie Chawanje Mughogho, Doordarshan Director General Aruna Sharma said the remarks of the commentator were "unintentional" and "inadvertent".

Uganda has already been threatening to lead an African boycott of the Games. India is counting on a chunk of African votes for its election to UN Security Council on Tuesday.

The Malawian President is due for a state visit to India on November 3.

Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa. Formerly known as Nyasaland, the country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi.

The big questions arise now that after Uganda, now Malawi case, India seems to be losing African goodwill with these Games? Should MEA have been involved in handling the Games and delegates at some stage?

What's your reaction?
