COIMBATORE: In a paradox of sorts, Coimbatore, which boasts of being an educational hub, has failed to send a single student to the premier Indian Institutes of Technology this year.“From the Coimbatore centre where 923 aspirants wrote the JEE 2011, no one has qualified in the main merit list. Only a lone (Dalit) student has got selected to attend the preparatory course,” V Kamakoti, chairman, JEE, IIT-Madras Zone, told Express. The one-year preparatory course in basic science is meant for students belonging to the SC/STs and physically disabled category, to equip them better. After the course, they have to clear an examination to qualify for admission.“We give 50 per cent relaxation in marks for students belonging to these categories. Despite that, some vacancies arise,” Kamakoti added. While Coimbatore fared badly, 354 of the 8,583 aspirants from Tamil Nadu made it to the JEE merit list including 227 in the general category, 95 OBCs, 29 SCs, two STs and one PD aspirant.Commenting on the poor performance of Coimbatore students, R Sundararajan, principal, Government College of Technology (GCT) said, “Our Plus Two syllabus does not give importance to application of mind.Schools do not develop the students’ thinking ability and even Math is memorised. The JEE is not an ordinary examination. Students must start preparing from class X to succeed.”K Sathya Narayanan, principal, Mani Higher Secondary School, pointed out that 99 per cent of the city schools were affiliated to the State Board. “Only now CBSE schools are emerging here and it would take 10 to 15 years for them to develop and prepare the students better for the JEE,” he added.
