New Delhi: Angry over non payment of salary and arrears for three months, hundreds of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) workers went on a strike demanding immediate release of funds.
Sources said, nearly 1.5 lakh MCD employees including sanitation workers, teachers, engineers, health department etc decided to go for a strike after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal allegedly showed an ignorant attitude to the issue.
With the latest civic crises, the people in Delhi is going to suffer the most as the national capital is expected to stink more and students studying in municipal schools are going to face a tough time. Also, several people depending on municipal hospitals are expected to have a harrowing time during the strike.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government claims that they have already released funds for paying the salaries of MCD employees. However, agitated workers countered the claim and protested in front of Kejriwal's residence demanding their salaries.
Delhi BJP President, Satish Upadhyay said, "Going with the ground realties I can say that the Delhi Chief minister is lying over his claim that fund has been released for their (MCD workers) salaries."
"We have made several requests to the Delhi government but our pleas went in deaf ears. Therefore we have decided to go for a strike," Mazdoor Vikas Samyukta Morcha president Sanjay Gehlot said.
Meanwhile, Delhi High Court (HC) sought reply from the Delhi government, Centre, MCD over the crises.
Besides salaries and arrears, the employees are also demanding regularisation of contract-based employees and unification of the three corporations in Delhi.
Earlier, in October, 2015, East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) workers gone for a strike over similar demands. Later the strike was called off after Delhi HC asked the government for immediate disbursal of salaries.
