New Delhi: A delegation of MPs and MLAs from Delhi on Saturday met Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and requested him to release water to the national capital from Munak Canal in his state. The Munak canal was constructed by Haryana with financial assistance of around Rs 400 crore given by Delhi government on the condition that the national capital will be supplied 80 MGD water from it. But later, Haryana refused to supply water to the city.
As both sides failed to settle the dispute, the Prime Minister had set up a GoM headed by Home Minister P Chidambaram to find a solution to the matter. The delegation comprised MPs Sandeep Dikshit, Ramesh Kumar and Mahabal Mishra. A number of senior Congress MLAs were also part of the delegation.
"We requested the Haryana Chief Minister to release 80 MGD (million gallon per day) water to Delhi from Munak Canal," said an MLA who was part of the delegation. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had earlier this month said she will seek the Prime Minister's intervention in resolving the Munak canal dispute with Haryana.
