New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner YS Dadwal said the two suspected terrorists killed in Delhi's Jamia Nagar on Friday belonged to Indian Mujahideen - the same group which has been claiming responsibility for the recent spate of bomb blasts in different parts of the country.
Indian Mujahideen had also claimed responsibility for the September 13 serial bomb blasts in the national capital in which at least 22 people were killed and more than 130 others injured.
Addressing the media on Friday afternoon, Dadwal claimed that one of the slain 'terrorists' Atiq alias Basheer was linked to Abdus Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer, the mastermind behind serial bomb blasts in various parts of the country.
Dadwal said Tauqeer had a key role in the triggering the blasts. "He is responsible for manufacturing, planning and planting of bombs in Delhi. Similar devices were used to trigger the blasts in Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad," Dadwal said.
Atif was a key member of Indian Mujahideen and had travelled to Ahmedabad on July 24 with a group of 10 people and returned to Delhi on July 27 with 12 people - just a day after bomb blasts rocked Gujarat capital.
He confirmed that in Friday's encounter two terrorists were killed while two others managed to escape. “Atif and Sajid, both of whom belonged to Azamgarh (UP) were killed in the encounter,” Dadwal said.
He was also in Jaipur on May 13 – the day when serial bomb blasts shook the city.
Giving the details of the encounter Dadwal said the terrorists started firing first and the Special Cell of Delhi Police fired back in self defence.
“They fired eight rounds and 22 rounds were fired by the police. We also recovered one AK 47 and two .30 caliber foreign-made pistols. Some documents and a computer was also recovered from the house,” Dadwal said.
He denied that the encounter took place following an interrogation of Ahmedabad bomb blast suspect Abu Basher and claimed that the Special Cell had been following the leads for some time.
