BALASORE: At a time when people are yet to come to terms with the devastation that flood in the Subarnarekha caused, diarrhoea outbreak has pressed the panic button in the worst-hit blocks of Bhogarai, Baliapal, Sadar and Remuna.Tuntuni Patra (50) of Kusuda village under Kamarda police limits died of diarrhoea on Thursday. Her family members said she could not be shifted to hospital as the approach road to their house was submerged. She succumbed while undergoing treatment by a village quack. Sources said many people are complaining of diarrhoea and fever due to lack of treatment, safe drinking water and unhygienic living conditions. The affected people in interior pockets of the district are finding it hard to reach the hospitals since most roads have been washed away.Sources in the Chief District Medical Office, however, maintained there was no reason to panic. CDMO Iqballudin Ahmad said consumption of contaminated water and unhygienic food amid heavy rains is believed to be the main cause for spurt in diarrhoea cases. “Medical teams have been pressed into service. Health workers are distributing medicines and ORS packets to affected persons,” he said.
