CHENNAI: The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) have been directed by the Madras High Court to file a status report as to the steps taken for demolition of the unauthorised constructions in the City, within a month. The First Bench comprising Chief Justice MY Eqbal and Justice TS Sivgnanam, which gave the direction on Friday while passing further interim orders on a batch of writ petitions from Citizen Consumer Action Group and two others, hoped and trusted that during the interrugnum, the authorities concerned would take up immediate action on the lines suggested by the Monitoring Committee and file an action taken report with regard to the demolition of the unauthorised constructions. In the report, the authorities should also inform the court as to how many buildings, water supply and power had been disconnected and trade licences cancelled. The Monitoring Committee, in its report, suggested formation of a special task force to take up enforcement action on the unauthorised buildings in a focussed manner. As it would take some time, the committee decided that the CMDA might go ahead with issue of statutory notices as a preliminary step on 48 buildings in the City without waiting for formation of the task force.
