Paris: Sergio Perez has become the toast of Formula One following his phenomenal performance at the Malaysian GP. The 21-year-old clinched a second place at Sepang, in the process achieving Sauber’s best finish ever, but expressed his disappointment at not being able to win the race.
"Initially I was a bit disappointed for not having won the race. However, I realised that having come second is also a great result for us and is a perfect boost for the entire team," he said after the race.
Perez was referring to the fact that his car was quicker than that of Fernando Alonso. Perez had reached within striking distance of Alonso’s Ferrari but an error on his part resulted in the Spaniard taking the lead.
Speaking about his next target, Perez said improving his overall performance is the priority. "We have to push hard and, of course, we have to stay realistic. Although the pace in the race was good, we should not forget that this result came after a very special race in extraordinary conditions," he said.
The Malaysian GP commenced in wet conditions which helped reduce the mechanical advantage that some teams inherently possess. A combination of luck, driving skills and pit stop strategy becomes decisive in such cases.
Perez was confident that his first F1 win would come sooner or later and that ideally it would very well happen this season. On the kind of reactions he got after the race, he said that he appreciated the tremendous support he has been receiving, especially from his home country.
"I regard it as a kind of reward for all I have done in my career so far, which hasn’t always been easy," he added.
