Wednesday’s mishap that claimed the lives of three persons could have been caused after 2 kg of LPG leaked from a 14-kg cylinder inside a single-room house with no windows, and only a door for ventilation. The tragedy was waiting to happen.
Jothilakshmi had reported the leak on Tuesday afternoon. When the Indane certified technician, came to check the cylinder valve, regulator and other sections of the unit, the gas was reportedly leaking. Jothilakshmi’s attempt to light the unit sparked off the explosion which blew off the asbestos sheet roof.
Police said that they suspect at least 2 kg of gas could have been present inside the house. Indane and Revenue officials visited the poorly ventilated house. Police said that they would investigate the lapses, if any, on the part of the gas agency.
