Discuss introducing Moral Studies

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has directed the School Education Secretary and Director to hold a discussion on introducing a  separate subject on ‘Moral Studies’ at the primary school leve and take a decision in accordance with law.The first bench comprising Chief Justice M Y Eqbal and Justice T S Sivagnanam gave the direction on April 2 while disposing of a PIL from advocate V Kasinatha Bharathi of Vadaranyam.The petitioner’s counsel S Prabakaran, pointed out shocking incidents like a school boy murdering his class teacher, suicide by students and a girl being raped by four college students.  He contended that it all happened due to the lack of imparting moral values.There was no recreation or relaxation from the stress these students were facing.  They were a depressed lot and teaching morals as a subject in separate classes alone would eliminate these evils, Prabakaran argued.Disposing of the petition, the bench directed Bharathi to produce a copy of this order along with his representation to the school education secretary and director, who should discuss the issues raised by him and take a decision in accordance with law.
