CHENNAI: A little over six months after the DMDK occupied the seat of principal opposition party in the Legislative Assembly, it donned the role of opposition in reality on Thursday.Addressing a gathering at a day-long fast to condemn the AIADMK government for hiking bus fares and milk prices, DMDK president Vijayakant said the government could have averted the steep price rise by plugging the holes in the transport department. “Except for the crew members (driver and conductors), the entire department is corrupt. We too have a trade union and I can list out the malpractices,” he alleged. He wondered why the price hike was not announced before the local body polls. He said, “It is the price for enjoying freebies and the government should not offer anything free of cost. With the distribution of free power, we are now suffering from severe electricity shortage.” He pointed out that both the AIADMK and DMK have done little to improve the power sector. Touching on the Koodankulam issue, he underlined that the protests against the plant has entered the 100th day. “Has the government spoken to the Centre in this regard?” he asked. On reports over DMDK MLAs switching sides, he stated, “I am not bothered about anyone making their way out. None can disgrace Vijayakant, as my fans are my strength.” He also reiterated that he was silent owing to his decision not to criticise the government for the initial six months.
