When Hrithik Roshan Found Dad Rakesh Roshan Crying After Koyla's Release
Hrithik Roshan had once revealed that he saw his father, director Rakesh Roshan, cry thrice in his life.

Rakesh Roshan is a prominent figure in the Hindi film industry. Over his career of more than five decades, the veteran actor-director has helmed several popular films, including Khoon Bhari Maang, Khudgarz and Karan Arjun, as well as his son Hrithik Roshan’s debut film, Kaho Na…Pyaar Hai. However, the filmmaker underwent a challenging phase after his 1997 action-thriller Koyla, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, was released.

In an earlier interview with ETC Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan talked about the three times he saw his father get emotional. Revealing that the director got teary-eyed thrice in his life, the Krrish actor shared that he witnessed his father crying over a call when his first film, Kaho Na…Pyaar Hai was released in 2000. The next time, the actor’s father was emotional when he underwent brain surgery in 2013.

However, the first time Rakesh was sentimental was when there was a financial crisis at home. Recalling the time, Hrithik said, “Ek aur time tha jab Koyla k baad, there was some problem in the house. (There was a time when we faced a problem in our house after Koyla had flopped).”

The Kaabil actor continued, “He had lost all his money, whatever he had earned. Kuch kuch he had invested woh bhi gayab ho gaye aur kisi ko paise diye the woh bhaag gaya (He lost all the money he had invested and someone who had borrowed money from also ran off).” Hrithik mentioned that his father cried upon realising that his hard-earned money and his lifelong savings were gone.

Rakesh Roshan directed, co-wrote and produced Koyla, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Amrish Puri in lead roles. Initially, Shah Rukh’s role was offered to Sunny Deol, but he reportedly did not want to play a mute character and wasn’t very fond of the story either. Hence, he rejected the film. Koyla turned out to be an average-grosser film, which was made on a budget of Rs 12 crore and it earned more than double, earning Rs 28 crore in its worldwide box office. Notably, Hrithik, who had not yet debuted in films, was an assistant director to his father in the film.

On the work front, Hrithik Roshan was last seen in Siddharth Anand-directed action film Fighter, where he starred opposite Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor, Karan Singh Grover and others. At present, the 50-year-old actor is busy filming his upcoming action movie War 2, co-starring Kiara Advani.
