A DMK councillor and his driver were arrested for allegedly assaulting a government official in the early hours of Thursday.
According to police, Kailash Kumar, an Assistant Engineer attached to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) substation in Thirumangalam, was supervising cable relaying work for West Mogappair area around midnight.
He had taken permission from the police and the local body to proceed with the cable work, but considering the resultant traffic congestion, the work was scheduled post-midnight and works began as per schedule.
As Kumar was supervising the work, Andrews, DMK councillor of Ward 90, and his driver Karthik, both residents of Padi Kuppam Road, arrived at the spot and stopped the earthmover which was involved in trenching, saying the Assistant Engineer had failed to obtain permission from the councillor.
When Kumar tried to explain to Andrews that the work had to be approved by the TANGEDCO and should be allowed by the police and the local body and not by the councillor, the duo attacked him and Gabriel, the driver of the earthmover, before fleeing the spot. Kailash Kumar suffered minor injuries in the assault, while Gabriel sustained bleeding injuries. Both were rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where Gabriel was treated. The duo were subsequently discharged from the hospital.
On information, Thirumangalam Police Inspector Frank D Ruban registered a case under sections 332, 294(b) and 506(1) of IPC and arrested the councillor and his driver. They were remanded to judicial custody till September 12.
