CHENNAI: Senior journalist R Thiyagarajan, popularly known as Sinna Kuthsi, passed away in Chennai on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 77. For the past year, he had been treated at a private hospital for various ailments.DMK president M Karunanidhi, party treasurer MK Stalin and a number of journalists paid homage to him. The mortal remains of Sinna Kuthusi were cremated at the Mylapore crematorium.Sinna Kuthusi was born on June 15, 1934, in Tiruvarur and was drawn towards the Dravidian ideology while still a student. Influenced by the writings of Dravidian ideologue Kuthusi Gurusamy, in his early years, Thiyagarajan named himself as ‘Sinna Kuthusi’ (smaller needle) and under that name, wrote thousands of articles on political and social issues.He worked as a teacher in several schools and came in contact with DMK bigwig EVK Sampath. The meeting led him to resign from his job and take part in the anti-Hindi agitations. Many of his articles were published as books by Nakkeeran weekly. Never marrying, he lived in a bachelors’ mansion in Triplicane for several years.
