He was the only one of his kind, as any music lover would agree – from pop enthusiast and metal head alike. And though there will be no candles lit on this side of the globe to cherish his memory on his 53rd birth anniversary (August 29), Chennai will throw a happy yet wishful bash, that sounds like Michael indeed. His songs will be sung, played on the radio and as one can only imagine, on mobile speakers and iPods across the city.Ironically, this time around, the band that has taken a step forward to pay tribute to the legend is one that is making a comeback on the Chennai music scene after a long hiatus. It was close to a year ago that a NerveRek opened for Pain of Salvation at Saarang. Since then, they haven’t been on the city’s music circuit. In fact, some of the members don’t even live in the city anymore. Says a now Mumbai-based Arjun Dhanraj, vocalist, “We never planned that our comeback show in Chennai would be an MJ tribute. It just turned out that way.”It started off with a show booked in Mumbai for Jackson’s death anniversary in June, which led to another in Delhi and then one in Bangalore. “And now we’re in Chennai, finally,” he finishes off. Admittedly, though the band’s progressive rock genre is nowhere near pop, the King of Pop has always been a big influence. “He’s the reason I wanted to grow my hair,” laughs Arjun. “And when I was in school and my teachers would ask me what I wanted to be, I would say  that I want to be a popstar.”So what sort of set list does NerveRek and Friends have in store for fans? “It’s going to be all the favourites – Beat it, Billie Jean, Dirty Diana...” Arjun goes on a song spree. Also, he reveals, “We may just do an acoustic version of Human Nature.” No doubt, that’s going to be one number to watch out for this evening.
