'Doesn't Matter Who Sits On CM’s Chair, People Chose Kejriwal': AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj Invokes Ramayana
Saurabh Bharadwaj has said that while Arvind Kejriwal will temporarily step down as Delhi's Chief Minister, a party member will take his place until the next elections. He emphasised that the public mandate belongs to Kejriwal.

Ahead of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation on Tuesday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Saurabh Bharadwaj today said the chair belongs to Kejriwal.

Speaking to the media, Bharadwaj also said one of his party members will sit on the chair until the next elections in Delhi.

“It does not matter who sits on the chief minister’s chair, because the mandate was for Arvind Kejriwal. The public chose Arvind Kejriwal,” Bharadwaj said.

“He has said that he will not sit on the chief minister’s chair until the people ask again, but the chair belongs to Arvind Kejriwal for these and the next five years. One of us will sit on the chair until the next elections take place. It will be similar to how Bharat ruled in Lord Ram’s absence (in Ramayana). There will be a discussion with the MLAs today and the name may be decided in it,” he added.

ARVIND KEJRIWAL TO RESIGN TODAY

With Kejriwal expected to resign later on Tuesday, AAP MLAs will hold a crucial meeting at his residence to pick his successor. Kejriwal is also likely to meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena at 4.30 pm and tender his resignation.

After being released from Tihar Jail on bail in the excise policy case, the AAP national convenor said on Sunday that he would resign within 48 hours and sought early polls in Delhi. He vowed not to sit in the chief minister’s chair until people gave him a “certificate of honesty”.

Names of Delhi ministers Atishi, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot and Saurabh Bharadwaj are making the rounds as contenders, party insiders said and added that Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal and Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel were also probables, news agency PTI reported.

THE RAMAYANA REFERENCE

Bharat, the younger brother of Lord Ram, was the regent of Ayodhya during Ram’s exile. Regarded for his devotion towards his elder brother, Bharat went against his mother and denied the throne of Ayodhya. However, later, Lord Ram told him he was presently living in exile to fulfil his father’s pledge, and that in his absence, his brother should take up the throne.

When Bharat realised that Ram could not be persuaded otherwise, he urged his half-brother to give him his sandals. He proposed to place Ram’s sandals upon the throne of Ayodhya and rule as a regent for the period of Ram’s exile, as an ascetic.

Lord Ram consented to the idea, after which Bharat carried Ram’s sandals upon his head, proceeding to Nandigrama, a village on the outskirts of Ayodhya.

Placing the sandals on the throne to represent Ram, Bharat assumed the regency of Kosala for fourteen years, the kingdom administered from the village.
