CHENNAI: The genuine movement of the people against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) must not be denigrated, MD-MK general secretary Vaiko said on Sunday. Vaiko condemned Union Minister V Naray-anasamy’s statement that the Centre would probe the source of funding for anti-KKNPP protestors. The protest of the people — borne out of fear — was appropriate against the backdrop of the nuclear equipment suppliers’ refusal to be liable for damages, he said in a statement here. Quoting experts like MV Ramana, Vaiko reiterated his argument that N-power was unsafe.“The people’s protest was driven by the fear that their well-being and the health of the future generations would be affected. The allegations of instigation by foreign powers, the involvement of Christian missionaries and now, the Union minister’s charge with regard to the funding of the protest, are all strongly condemnable,” he said. The Congress, which is heading the Centre, would have to face the consequences of the people’s anger if it maligned the true protest of the fishermen, besides others, Vaiko warned.
