The Union government has taken a major step towards fulfilling a longpending demand for special status for the Gulbarga Revenue Region by approving the draft Bill to amend Article 371 of the Constitution on Tuesday.
Union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also the Gulbarga MP, told Express over phone from New Delhi that the Union Cabinet which met under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Manamohan Singh, unanimously approved the draft Bill.
The Gulbarga Revenue Region comprises Bidar, Gulbarga, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary districts. The draft Bill was approved by the Political Affairs Committee of the Union Government last fortnight.
The draft proposes to provide reservation in employment and education to the people of Gulbarga Region as well as provide opportunities of establishing a statutory board for the infrastructure development of the region.
