Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 rocks north India
The epicentre of the earthquake was the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan; tremors were felt in Pakistan as well.

New Delhi: An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale hit northern part of India on Thursday. Mild tremors were felt in the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan.

The tremor was felt at 7.30 pm in most parts of Kashmir, triggering panic among the residents who rushed out of their homes, as it brought back the memories of October 2005 earthquake, officials said.

Officials of the disaster management cell said so far there were no reports of any damage or casualty due to the tremor.

Kashmir, which is located in highly earthquake-prone siesmic Zone V, had experienced a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005, flattening many parts along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir as well as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

While 1300 persons were killed in Kashmir, thousands more were killed in PoK.

According to reports, the epicentre of the earthquake was the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan.

Tremors were felt in Pakistan as well. A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan on Thursday though there were no reports of casualties or damage to property.

The temblor, which lasted about five seconds, occurred at about 7 pm and was followed by powerful aftershocks. It was felt in Islamabad, Lahore and other parts of Punjab, Peshawar and across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

At several places, people rushed out of buildings and began praying. Officials said they had not received any reports of casualties or damage to property.
