Chennai: The Election Commission has issued notices to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and opposition DMK for allegedly using excess number of vehicles during electioneering for the assembly polls scheduled on Monday.
In two separate notices to the ruling AIADMK, the Commission pointed out that Jayalalithaa had used nearly 80 vehicles during her visit to Krishnagiri district on May 1st and 2nd whereas as per the standing instructions not more than three vehicles are allowed in a convoy.
"The party has neither taken permission for using so many vehicles for the said campaign nor all the vehicles had permits exhibited on the windscreen, as prescribed by the Commission," the Commission said.
The Election Commission has asked for an explanation from the party by this evening.
The Commission also noted that the Chief Minister was using a large number of vehicles and buntings, flags and posters in Park Town Assembly constituency on May 3rd, and has sought an explanation in this case by Sunday.
In a notice to DMK, the Commission pointed out the use of as many as 34 vehicles by Union Communications Minister and DMK leader, Dayanidhi Maran during electioneering in Krishnagiri district on May 3rd.
The Commission has sought an explanation from the party by Saturday evening.
