Moscow: Kenya's Edna Ngeringwony Kiplagat claimed the first gold medal at the 2013 IAAF World Championship here on Saturday when she won the women's marathon in 2:25.44.

The 33-year-old Kiplagat, who led home a clean Kenyan podium sweep in the event's last edition Daegu, made history as the first woman ever to land back-to-back marathon titles in World Championships.

India's Sudha Singh failed to qualify for the next stage by finishing 12th in her heat in the women's 3000m Steeplechase.

Kenya dominated the race with Milcah Chemos Cheywa and Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi topping the time sheets clocking 9:36.16 and 9:36.19 respectively. The other runners who completed the top five and advanced in the competition were Ethiopian Sofia Assefa, Ukraine's Valentyna Zhudina and Salima Elouali Alami of Morocco.
