Bangalore: Eminent Kannada writer and thinker UR Ananthamurthy is battling for his life at Manipal hospital in Bangalore. The 82-year-old stalwart of Indian literature has been unwell for a long time. He has been undergoing a daily dialysis after both his kidneys failed a few years back.

According to the doctors at the hospital, he is in a very critical state, but responding to the treatments. Ananthamurthy got Jnanapeeth award in 1994. He was also chairman of the Central Sahithya Academy, National Book Trust and Film and Television Institute of India.

He served as Vice Chancellor, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam in Kerala in the late 1980s. He is currently the Chancellor of the Central University, Gulbarga in Karnataka.

Ananthamurthy taught English literature at Mysore University for over two decades. Widely traveled, Ananthamurthy is one of the most famous Indian writers who is also well known abroad.

An activist writer, Ananthamurthy participated in several public movements and known for his views on several issues.
