Pune: Former Maharashtra Health Minister and NCP leader Digvijay Khanvilkar died in Pune on Thursday following a heart attack, hospital sources said.
Khanvilkar, who was returning from Mumbai on Thursday evening, had taken a halt at Balewadi Sports Complex near the city when he suffered a massive heart attack.
His driver rushed him to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead, family sources said.
Khanvilkar (60), who hailed from Kolhapur, was the state Health Minister from 1999 to 2004.
He was elected five times to the state Assembly from Karvir constituency in Kolhapur.
Last rites would be performed at Kolhapur, sources said.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan condoled Khanvilkar's death in a statement late in the evening, saying that his tenure as health minister would always be remembered by the people.
