Busting yet another extortion racket, the Odiansalai Police on Saturday arrested five persons belonging to an 11-member gang on charges of threatening a PWD contractor. They are on the lookout for the other six gang members.
According to the police, the gang had been threatening 40-year-old realtor and PWD contractor Prakash (name changed) for the past one week. On September 10, the gang members entered his house in Ellaiamman Koil Street with the intention of stealing valuables when they found Prakash in a compromising position with a young woman. The goons videographed the couple and used the footage to blackmail him.
They also took away items such as a television, stabilizer, pedestal fan, ATM card, cellphone and Rs 4,500 from the house, police said. Prakash approached the police on Friday when the gang demanded another Rs 2 lakh.
The arrested rowdies Shozhan, Velu, Satish, Sundar and Nagaraj are suspected to have links with gangster Karuna, a rival to murdered gangster Jegan. Karuna is currently lodged in Yanam Prison.
Earlier this week, the police had arrested four suspected Jegan gang members in two extortion cases.
Jegan was killed in a bomb attack here when a gang waylaid the police vehicle carrying the notorious rowdy back to Karaikal jail after being produced in the Puducherry court.
