New Delhi: Technology giants Facebook, Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung have joined hands to form Internet.org, a global partnership between technology leaders, nonprofits, local communities and experts that intends to make Internet access available to the next 5 billion people.
The launch was announced by Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. "There are huge barriers in developing countries to connecting and joining
the knowledge economy. Internet.org brings together a global partnership that will work to overcome these challenges, including making Internet access
available to those who cannot currently afford it," Zuckerberg said.
Only a third of the world's population, 2.7 billion people, have access to the Internet and Internet adoption is growing by less than 9 per cent each year. Internet, org aims to connect the remaining two-thirds.
Sharing tools, resources and best practices, Internet.org partners will explore solutions in three major opportunity areas: affordability, efficiency, and business models.
