Jhalmuri, a popular street food originating from Kolkata, is among the foodies’ favourites. Its flavorful blend of puffed rice, fresh vegetables, chutney and aromatic spices makes it a delicious dish. And guess what? This Indian snack has made its way to the streets of London, bringing an authentic taste of Kolkata to the UK. The dish’s vibrant flavours and unique preparation have quickly become a favourite among locals.
A food vlogger, who explores the gastronomic life of London, came across Jhalmuri Express. But what drew his attention was not the name, but the British man rolling an actual food cart, which resembled street food trolleys here in India.
In the Instagram video, the vendor is seen expertly preparing jhalmuri with a flair reminiscent of Kolkata’s street food scene. He tosses puffed rice into a steel bowl, adding fresh coriander, chopped cucumbers, onions and spices. Using a long, thin knife, he mixes the ingredients in the traditional style before squeezing fresh lemon juice over the concoction. The final touch comes with the jhalmuri packed in a newspaper cone, just like in Kolkata, accompanied by Imli chutney, bhujia and masala. After tasting it, the vlogger declared it a true Kolkata-style, spicy jhalmuri.
