Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, on Sunday, ordered the renovation of the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Kamarajar Salai near Marina beach here and the memorial of former CM K Kamaraj in Kanyakumari district at a total cost of Rs 48.95 lakh.
An official release here said Rs 11.95 lakh has been allotted for refurbishing the Gandhi statue. The project will include laying of new tiles on the platform on which the statue stands, refurbishing the wall on the platform and putting in place a stainless ladder. Additional lighting will also be provided to the statue, apart from placing colorful flower pots in and around it.
The Kamaraj memorial will be renovated at a cost of Rs 37 lakh. Measures such as relaying of cement plastering on walls and floors, creation of a garden with water facilities, new electrical works and decoration by using teak wood would be undertaken.
Such memorials have been established to remember the efforts of the great leaders in earning the country’s freedom and also its development, the release stated. The decision to renovate these structures is part of the proactive measures initiated by the AIADMK regime to ensure proper maintenance of the memorials of such leaders.
