THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Basic Service to Urban Poor (BSUP) team in the City Corporation which is in charge of the slum development project at Karimadom colony has been entrusted with a rather interesting job. To name the blocks (flats) that have come up in the colony. Since names like Nila or Pamba have already been exhausted - not just the buildings in Technopark but the MLA Hostel blocks in Palayam too flaunt the same names - the team has a busy time at hand, trying to come up with names that sound and feel good to the colony residents. At the same time, are not overused. ‘’Let them have flats with names. Many private apartments and big flats have names, then why not Karimadom, which has changed to flats? We have asked the team to come up with a name, it would be easy for recognising the blocks too,’’ said Deputy Mayor G Happykumar. As of now, the Karimadom colony has four blocks that came up in the first phase covering a total of 80 flats or apartments. In the second phase, the scheme saw some 60 flats coming up in three blocks. The seven blocks will be named now and once the rest of the construction is also complete, they will also be gifted names. ‘’It is not a bad idea. Because, it would be easy for the postman to find out the flats if the blocks have names,’’ said Aswathy, a resident of the colony. The 80 houses that came up in the first phase have been occupied. And so are the 20 houses that came up in the second phase. The remaining 36 flats in this phase have been completed and the inauguration would probably be held soon after the Neyyatinkara bypoll. The third phase will come up with a difference. ‘’This time, we have decided not to evacuate the residents fully. But only the space needed for construction would be evacuated. So that families do not have to be lying in the sheds waiting for two and three years for the construction to get over,’’ said Happykumar. The construction is being carried out by COSTFORD.
