Steve Jobs famously observed — ‘Everyone in this country should learn how to programme because it teaches you how to think.’ Coding is quickly becoming a necessary skill for children in today’s technologically advanced environment. Youngsters nowadays may pick up coding fast with the correct assistance and resources because they are already accustomed to using technology. However, the question is: When should they begin? Social media is agog over the idea of beginning early after seeing a video of kids chatting casually about coding at a Google Meet.

Three boys are shown evaluating a coding assignment at the beginning of the short video. Even still, one of them calls the code “pretty basic,” while finding the UI, buttons and colours to be quite appealing. A third child adds on, talking about more features like experienced developers.

“Instead of playing sports or watching cartoons, kids nowadays are coding,” the post’s description reads.

The video has received over a million views since it was uploaded online, and its viral status has caused debate on the internet.

A user was of the opinion, “It should be illegal to expose kids to React. Kids should focus on Maths, art, communication and sports.”

Another person mentioned, “I once got stuck on a complex issue and found the solution on YouTube from a 14-year-old boy.”

“Maybe they should watch Power Rangers instead,” said a user.

Yet another individual stated, “This is super cool! Kudos to them.”

“The world is healing. Coding is just another way of problem solving and it is fantastic that they are starting young at it,” read a comment.

What is coding?

As the term programming suggests, coding is the act of writing computer code that defines tasks for automation. These instructions, commonly referred to as code, are coded using different programming languages, which act as a link between human concepts and the machine’s comprehension of them.

In a nutshell, coding makes it possible for human beings to pass information to the computer. It entails the development of an algorithm that describes the instructions that a computer is supposed to take. This can be as mundane as displaying text on a screen to as complicated as running an entire software application or managing data in a database.
