With the holy month of Ramzan beginning shortly, former Congress MP Paripoornanand Painuli on Wednesday asked Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna to put a ban on lavish Iftaar parties in calamity-hit Uttarakhand. In a letter to Bahuguna, Painuli asked him to set an example by neither hosting Iftaar parties nor attending those hosted by others to honour the sentiments of thousands of people who have lost their kin and homes in the colossal tragedy.

"Many families have lost their children and the affected people are on the brink of death due to starvation. In this moment of grave crisis, throwing Iftaar parties will be out of place," Painuli said.
