The Tis Hazari court in Delhi has issued a production warrant against extradited gangster Abu Salem.

New Delhi: The Tis Hazari court in Delhi has issued a production warrant against extradited gangster Abu Salem in connection with three extortion cases and asked the authorities of Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail to produce him before it on February 27.

Salem was supposed to be shifted to Delhi on Wednesday but the special Tada court in Mumbai stopped his transfer at the last hour on Wednesday after his lawyers submitted before the court that the gangster faces a threat to his life.

The Special cell of Delhi Police had earlier obtained permission from the Tada court to take Salem to Delhi. Accordingly, the court had granted his custody to Delhi Police on the condition that he will produced in Mumbai on February 23.

Salem's lawyers, who moved an application before TADA court Judge P D Kode, claimed that proper arrangements were not made for the gangster's travel to Delhi and that he faced a threat to life.

"The Special Cell of the Delhi Police has sent a rail ticket for Salem's travel to Delhi. The train takes 36 hours to reach Delhi and it can have adverse impact on his health as Salem has back ailments. Moreover, no personnel from their (Delhi Police) side was ready to accompany him during the travel," Salem's lawyer Ashok Sarogi said.

One of the Delhi police's cases against Salem dates back to July 2002 in which Salem is accused of demanding Rs 10 million as protection money from one Rajat Nagrath, owner of Allied Communication in East of Kailash, South Delhi.

On Thursday, the Tis Hazari court also issued a show-cause notice to the Superintendent of Mumbai Arthur Road Jail, asking him Salem was not presented before it on Thursday.
