Washington: The detention hearing of Ghulam Nabi Fai arrested by the FBI for illegally lobbying for Pakistan and its spy agency, the ISI, to influence US' policy on Kashmir, has been set for Friday, court officials said.

Fai, 62, arrested by the FBI on Tuesday made donations to Congressmen and presidential candidates and organised conferences and seminars to reflect the viewpoint of Pakistan on Kashmir.

A spokesman of the Department of Justice said that Fai has been scheduled to appear before the judge Theresa Carroll Buchanan at the US District Court in Alexandria, Virginia.

Fai, was initially produced before the court on Tuesday a few hours after his arrest.

According to court officials, Fai has not intimated who his attorney would be, but was hopeful that he would be able to have one by Friday.

The FBI in its affidavit before the US court alleged that Kashmir-born US national received hundreds and thousands of dollars from the ISI and the Government of Pakistan with the sole objective of molding the view of American policy makers on Kashmir.

Commending the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for Fai's arrest, the Washington-based Hindu American Foundation (HAF) on Wednesday said that this signals awareness within American intelligence agencies about ISI activities in the US.

"The arrest of Fai is a troubling reminder of the extensive reach and influence of the ISI," said Aseem Shukla, co-founder and Board Member of HAF.

"We commend the FBI for exposing the alleged illegitimate activities of the Kashmir Center and revealing its connection to the ISI, an authoritarian government institution of Pakistan that does not heed the norms or laws

of public engagement - at home or abroad," Shukla said in a statement.
