COIMBATORE: Around 100 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth `15 lakh was stolen from a moving train on Thursday morning.Balashanmugam, 54, a goldsmith, was a frequent traveller to Kerala, where he would trade his jewellery, and purchase antique gold jewellery in return.Balashanmugam, along with his colleagues Balaji and Saravanan, travelled to Udupi and Mangalore last Sunday and boarded the Chennai-bound West Coast Express on Wednesday night, planning to get off at Coimbatore.He was carrying 800 grams (100 sovereigns) of antique jewellery in a suitcase, and slept with the suitcase under his head.However, when he woke up at 6.30 a.m at Ottappalam station near Palakkad, he was shocked to find his suitcase missing.Balashanmugam filed a complaint in this connection with the railway police at Coimbatore Junction. RPF Inspector M Lawrence registered the complaint and the case was transferred to the Palakkad Railway Police, since the theft took place at Ottapalam. Investigations are currently under way.
