KOCHI: The state government on Wednesday filed an appeal before the Kerala High Court to enhance the life imprisonment given to five accused in the Kanichukulangara murder case by the Alappuzha Principal Sessions court.Appellant State Public Prosecutor T Asaf Ali submitted that the sentence imposed by the Sessions Judge against second accused Ajith Kumar alias Saji, third accused Saju alias Mrugom saju, fourth accused Shibu alias Chief, sixth accused Sajith and seventh accused Himalaya Group managing director Bineesh should be enhanced. The government pointed out that in this case, the life imprisonment should be enhanced to capital punishment or to a bigger punishment as in Swami Sredhananda’s case. The trial court had earlier awarded death sentence to first accused Unni, a lorry driver. The prosecution case was that Unni and Ajith kumar purposefully rammed a lorry into a Tata Safari carrying T G Ramesh, his sister Latha, driver Shamsuddin and two others near the Autokast factory at Kanichukulangara. Vijayadharan and Kuttikrishnan survived the crash. The murder was allegedly planned by Sajith and Bineesh with whom Ramesh had parted earlier. “The trial court found that the case will come under the realm of the rarest of the rare cases. After having come to such a conclusion, it is not proper to impose an inadequate sentence. The accused killed Ramesh in a cruel manner. And to confirm his death, the accused intentionally took the life of two others and caused grievous injuries to two others,” petition pointed out.
