GULBARGA: The Gulbarga University which had erroneously considered a student absent from examination and announced the result as ‘failed, has corrected its mistake. Now, it has announced the result of the candidate as ‘passed’. Responding to reports published in Express, the authorities of Gulbarga Universities took the matter seriously and set a new precedent in the history of the university by giving average marks of other subjects to the paper which was lost due to the negligence of the university/ examination centre.Express had reported that though Manjushree, a 3rd year BCA student of Wardslaw CSI College, Bellary, appeared for the Discrete Mathematical Structure paper in October, 2010 at Veerashiva College Exam Centre in Bellary, the Gulbarga University declared her result as failed stating that she was ‘absent’.When Express published a report on May 8 along with the letter of the Wardslaw College to the university attaching the proof of the student appearing for the examination, Gulbarga University vice-chancellor Prof E T Puttaiah took the mater seriously. He contacted Kuvempu University where a similar incident had reported a few years ago. The Kuvempu University awarded marks taking the average marks as the base as per a Supreme Court ruling.Documents of the Kuvempu University and the case of Manjushree were sent to the legal experts of Gulbarga University.Meanwhile, Express published another story on August 8 and drew the attention of the university towards its neglect of the previous report too. Later, the matter was taken to a logical end.The Gulbarga University Registrar for Evaluation Prof D B Naik told Express that based on the report of the legal experts of the Gulbarga University, the university modified the result of Manjushree on August 12 and declared the student as ‘passed’ in first class with 74 marks in Discrete Mathematical Structure taking the average marks in other subjects she scored as the base.
