Gujarat HC pulls up govt in Ishart Jahan case
The HC asked the three members of the SIT to file individual reports on the progress of the investigations.

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Friday lashed out at the Narendra Modi Government for its handling of Ishrat Jahan case and told the state not to compel the Court to hand over the case to a central agency like the CBI or NIA. The High Court expressed its dissatisfaction over the report filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the case. The Court, while pulling up the state government, wanted to know why the officers related to the case had still not been transferred.

The HC asked the three members of the SIT to file individual reports on the progress of the investigations.

The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed the Gujarat government's plea challenging the constitution of a special investigation team (SIT) by the Gujarat High Court to probe the "fake" encounter killing of teenager Ishrat Jahan and three others.

Mumbai-based Ishrat (19) was killed in an encounter along with Javed Ghulam Sheikh alias Pranesh Kumar Pillai, Amjad Ali alias Rajkumar Akbar Ali Rana and Jisan Johar Abdul Gani by state crime branch officials near Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.

Following the encounter, the Gujarat Police had claimed that Ishrat and three other slain youths were Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives on a mission to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi.

It had also claimed that the encounter was carried out following specific inputs from the central intelligence agencies that LeT was planning to carry out attacks in various parts of the country.
