Chandigarh: A court on Monday granted bail to Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Gaganjit Singh Barnala who is accused of raping his domestic help in his legislator’s hostel flat.
Gaganjit, son of Tamil Nadu Governor Surjeet Singh Barnala, was arrested on August 12. The court asked him to pay a surety bond of Rs 50,000.
After winning bail, Barnala's lawyer alleged that his client had been " implicated" by police and there was "political influence".
"The forensic report indicates presence of no sperm on the vests, bed sheet and other material worn by Gaganjit Singh during the time of the alleged crime," he said.
"The allegations of victim (rape) are not supported by the medical report of doctors. The medical report in this case does not rule out the possibility of self-inflicted injury by the woman on her private parts," he said.
The domestic help’s lawyer said she was "surprised" by the judge's order.
The All India Democratic Women Association claimed that the court had “misinterpreted” the forensic report in this case.
The case would heard next on September 25.
