New Delhi: On Wednesday, two hackers went out of the way for the love of their favourite Youtuber, PewDiePie. Hacking into at least 70,000 Google’s Chromecast devices, they flashed a message to subscribe to PewDiePie. He was recently in news after he passed T-series to be the top Youtube channel.
“CastHack, Hacking Chromecasts/Google Homes/SmartTVs, Progress: 123141/123141 [100.00000%], Running for 1 hour, 4 minutes, 23 seconds, SUBSCRIBE TO PEWDIEPIE,” said the message.
After targeting the devices, the two hackers who go by handles @HackerGiraffe and @j3ws3r pointed to the vulnerabilities of their devices.
“If you came here because you’re a victim of #CastHack, then know that your Chromecast/SmartTV/GoogleHome is exposed to the public internet, and is leaking sensitive information related to your device and home,” they said. A PewDiePie video was also played on the hacked devices.
PewDiePie currently has 79 million subscribers, while T-series stands at 78 million.
The hack attack was made possible by badly configured routers. The hackers found streaming devices exposed to the public internet to rename the device’s Wi-Fi name. The video was reportedly played in over 2,700 devices.
Earlier, hackers cracked into the Wall Street Journal website to campaign for PewDiePie, the Swedish video-game streamer and vlogger . In another case, a hacker had cracked into 50,000 printers to print a message to subscribe to PewDiePie’s channel.
