CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court on Tuesday constituted an expert committee to study the necessity of demolishing two maths along the boundary wall of the Jagannath Temple at Puri which are affecting the structure of Singhadwar (Lions gate). A Division Bench of Justices Pradip Mohanty and I Mohanty has directed the committee, comprising Endowments Commissioner, Chief Architect, Odisha, and Superintending Archaeologist, ASI, Bhubaneswar Circle, to carry out the inspection of the Singhadwar and the impact of the mathas on it by March 10. The Committee is to submit its report to the Court by March 13, the next date of hearing. The Court directed the inspection in response to petitions challenging the order of the ASI for demolition of the two mathas as they are impacting the Singhadwar. The gate has developed cracks and is to be repaired by the ASI. The ASI noted that the two structures were exerting pressure on the gate and posing threat to it. The Government had subsequently filed a report through the Puri Collector stating that “immediate demolition” of the maths was necessary to protect the gate structure and the boundary wall of the Temple.
