KOCHI: The Kerala High court on Monday said it would consider the possibility of bringing in restrictions on packing and selling of goods in plastic carry bags. The court had earlier sought the view of the State Government and Corporations in this regard. The government submitted that it is contemplating on a comprehensive legislation on plastic prohibition. However Kochi Corporation sought time to file a statement. The association of plastic manufacturers and plastic dealers has filed an impleading petition in this case. The petitioners had an apprehension that the court may prohibit manufacture of law grade plastic carry bags. The court said that plastic carry bags are extensively used in the sale of vegetables, fish and meat. The same bags are re-used for packing home wastes from kitchens and dumping the same in public places. “The waste dumped in plastic bags decomposes and causes pollution of the atmosphere and water. Even birds and animals eating such decomposed materials are affected by bacterial contamination. It is worth conducting a study as to whether the decreasing number of birds is on account of this contaminated waste eaten by them,” the court said. The court will decide on the matter after the final hearing.
