Nag Panchami is observed on the fifth day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Shravana i.e. today, August 9. On this day, the Hindu devotees worship Nag Devta and offer milk to the snakes. They also pray for the well-being of their brothers and family. Each area has their traditions when it comes to Nag Panchami. In Uttara Kannada district, the Nag idol is carried from house to house by men. After travelling each home with Nag idols in hand, the young boys immerse the idols in the river.

Nagar Panchami is like a family festival for the people in the coastal and hilly parts of Karnataka. The ritual regarding Nag Panchami in Uttara Kannada involves making the naga idols with clay at home. They worship these idols. They also sell these idols. It is severely followed by the people who have migrated from Mundagodu area of Uttara Kannada district.

The housewives and children make and sell naga idols. In the morning, they collect the soil and make it wet by adding water. It should be followed by adding milk. Knead it on the floor and make idols from it. Those who don’t have naga idols in their family or those who don’t follow this tradition, wait for the children to reach their home to buy Naga idols. They come shouting “Nagappa Buykenree Nagappa”. They sell it for Rs 20 each.

Children earn Rs 2000-3000 on that day after going round the whole town. This ritual is performed for two days. Finally, on the next day after Shashti is over, the clay idol is dissolved like the Ganapathi idols immersed in the river. Naga Panchami is considered the biggest festival in the North Kannada district. Here worshipping the Naga Lord is hailed as an auspicious work.
