New Delhi: Railway Minister Lalu Prasad on Sunday claimed that he is "minister number one" and said his ministry was poised to cross another milestone with profits likely to touch the Rs 20,000 crore mark this year.

"Maine media se barabar suna aur samjha hai log mujhe do numbri ya joker kehte hain. Main do numbari nahin, main ek number hoon (I have heard from the media that my critics call me a fraud or a joker. But I am number one)," he told a gathering after inagurating a foot bridge in his parliamentary constituency on Saturday. "I am India's minister number one," he added.

The Railways has projected an increase of 11 per cent in its profits, which he described as "a miracle achieved through good planning and very hard work being done by me and my team".

"Some more miracles are in store for the railways due to our relentless efforts," he said.

The internal resources of the Railways in the current fiscal are expected to touch a record high of Rs 13,000 crore, a jump of around Rs 2,000 crore from its earnings five years ago, but this would be insufficient to fund the improvement of infrastructure.

Taking on his bete noire Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Prasad said that JD(U) leader could not match his performance as railway minister as he had failed to meet the expectations of the people.

"What Bihar is witnessing today are just false promises while genuine deeds, and big ones at that, are being executed by the UPA Government at the Centre and that too in a manner better than any one else," he said.
