What do you make of a girl who is so utterly romantic that she lives in a pink bedroom, and chooses a boyfriend who sends her one white flower every day? No, Simran is not a 14-year-old, she is a professional set designer, clearly in her mid-twenties.
Simran (played by Sonam Kapoor) is debut director Punit Malhotra’s lead character in I Hate Luv Storys (First of all, what's with the spelling issue? Whoever decided bad spelling is hip?). She is in love (?) with Raj (played by Sameer Dattani) and they are in a perfect relationship.
And surprise! She happens to meet Jay, played by Imran Khan, who hates the word mush and runs away from love stories. He doesn’t mind girls as long as they are limited to being his lust buddies.
Simran hates Jay and then falls madly in love with him. He doesn’t love her, but when he starts missing her, he realizes he is in love with her too. But by then Simran doesn’t want to be with him any longer, and so on and so forth.
Bored? Right. This could have been a refreshing love story only if:
1. There were no clichés! Originality is definitely not the strong point of this movie.
2. They are a young couple for God’s sake. Simran is made into this insipid girl, who knows nothing beyond romance and heartbreaks. And Jay is just this confused lad. Wish their characters were not so uni-dimensional.
3. Wish there was more humour. Even though in parts it was funny, sometimes in the name of humour you got dialogues like, ‘Women are like buses, if one leaves another comes along, but ultimately there is only one bus which can take you home’. I don’t know of any women who like being compared to buses! A bit of humour is provided in the first half by Kavin Dave, who plays Jay’s friend but then that goes for a toss too, in the second half.
Now for some good news. Sonam Kapoor looks pretty and Imran Khan has come up with a sincere performance. Sameer Soni, whose character is apparently based on eccentric director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is good.
The movie vaguely has a feel good quality about it and might be liked by teenyboppers going through their Mills and Boon stage. If mush is your scene, go watch it.
One query. Logistically isn’t it impossible to send your girlfriend a flower every single day, wherever she is? What was Raj or for that matter, Punit Malhotra thinking?
