The court had held Vikas and his cousin Vishal guilty of killing Nitish Katara.

New Delhi: Neelam Katara, mother of victim Nitish Katara on Friday welcomed the trial court verdict sentencing Vikas and his cousin Vishal Yadav to life imprisonment in the murder case saying she respected the decision of the court.

“Life sentence should mean a life sentence for it to be really meaningful. The general feeling is that life punishment especially for those who are politically powerful, there's a possibility of remission and finally the person spends less time in jail than a common man has spent running around in between the courts," says Neelam.

She adds, "I therefore, feel that it may not serve the purpose of really encouraging the common man to go and ask for justice."

"I respect the decision of the court" which has sentenced both of them to life imprisonment, Katara told reporters outside the Patiala House Court here.

"I will be able to make further comments only after I get a copy of the judgement," she said.

She adds, “This trial has shown that there are people out there who do their job honestly whether it is the UP Ghaziabad police, the public prosecutor, number of judges that have come in this case, I think they have done their duty without any fear of political clout.”

”Justice has won. We will keep up the fight if need be,” says Neelam.

“This is a fight for truth and justice and we will take it forward. It’s a major relief. There were major attempts from opposition to dent the case. I will be able to use the experience gathered from these six-years to help others who need it,” says Neelam Katara.

“I met Bharti Yadav the day I went to file an FIR. I also met her parents and also met the mother of Vikas Yadav but they expressed helplessness,” says Neelam.

The court had on Wednesday held Vikas and his cousin Vishal guilty of killing Nitish six years ago.

Vikas and Vishal, a year younger, had kidnapped Katara on the night of February 16, 2002 from a marriage party in Ghaziabad and killed him. Vikas opposed his sister Bharti Yadav's intimacy with Katara.
