New Delhi: Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former cricketer Imran Khan has released a statement through his former wife Jemima Goldsmith confirming that he fled house arrest and has gone into hiding.
In a statement released in London through Jemima, Khan said that he is in hiding to avoid arrest.
Claiming that police ransacked his Lahore residence on Sunday and roughed up members of his family, Khan also said that he was able to escape before the police arrived.
“They are using sheer force against lawyers, human rights organisations, political activists and all genuine opposition leaders are in jail,” Khan wrote in the e-mail statement.
In the statement, Khan accused former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto of being hand in glove with President Pervez Musharraf because she also fears the judiciary and is seeking a return to political life in Pakistan.
Khan claimed Benazir’s party had not been touched by the Pakistani authorities. He also warned that Musharraf's suppression of democratic forces is pushing Pakistan towards extremism.
Musharraf imposed emergency rule on Saturday, suspending the constitution, dismissing independent-minded judges and shutting down the media.
Authorities have been granted sweeping powers to arrest protesters and thousands of people have been put behind bars.
