Various ceremonies and rituals are being conducted to express devotion to the rain gods in Karnataka. This is because of the lack of rains in several districts of the state. Locals are praying for rainfall in their regions. In a particular village, a young man took part in an extraordinary ritual, offering a special homage to the Hindu god of rain, Varuna. This event has garnered attention, prompting interest in its details. In Anche Doddi village, located in Mandya district, residents endured sweltering heat and turned to deity Varuna in prayer. To seek relief, they organised a special ceremony, which involves dressing up a young man in a saree and conducting a procession. With temperatures soaring for the past week, the villagers felt compelled to invoke Varuna’s blessings. During the ceremony, the saree draped man led a procession through the village streets, carrying an idol of Varuna on his head, while another person carried a similar idol on their head. Others who joined in the procession carried umbrellas and incense sticks, all part of a ritual to please the rain god.
Yet another man carried a plough as he walked along with the protection, as a sign of good harvest in the village. The procession went from house to house along the lane, allowing women to worship the statue with sandalwood sticks and lighting aarti with camphor. Women then carried out the act of pouring water over the idols as the men bent down at regular intervals during the procession, expressing their fervent hope for rain. This ritual is believed to evoke Varuna’s benevolence and bring about much-needed rainfall in the region.
After completing the puja in the village, the idol was submerged in a nearby lake. The prasad from the puja was then distributed among the town’s residents. It is not the first time that such a ritual has taken place in Karnataka. To please the rain god, the residents of Karnataka are often spotted performing such rituals from time to time.
